Painted Bunting

Painted Buntings have made their seasonal debut in the area.  These medium-sized, seed eating finches are among the most popular among backyard birders.  Males appear to have been painted with all the colors of the rainbow, with blue heads, red underparts, and green backs.  Females and immature specimens are bright yellow-green overall, with a pale eyering.  Their song is distinctive and they tend to forage on the ground in dense cover, among grasses, or at seed feeders, preferring white millet over other seed offerings.  Painted Buntings can be shy and difficult to see, often hiding in foliage, but can become habituated to feeders.
